Go Crazy at J2 Terrarium’s Kokedama Workshop!

Kokedama that can be made in the kokedama art workshop for kids

Looks familiar? Yep, that cute ball is called a kokedama, and J2 Terrarium is offering to teach you how to make it!

Literally, kokedama translates to ‘moss ball’. This is because kokedama is a living plant sculpture, where the roots of the plant are wrapped by a ball of soil. This art workshop for kids covers how to shape and wrap the roots properly, as well as basic plant care for your little one’s new friend.

This workshop is suitable for children of all ages and developmental levels. Children under 6 years old should be accompanied by a parent, but those above 6 years old are in the good hands of the patient and caring instructors at J2 Terrarium!

Plus, for our children with special needs, the sensory satisfaction of being able to dig, plant and play with soil may also be quite soothing. After all, which kid doesn’t want to just play in the mud for a little while?

Your little one will love getting their hands messy as they learn how to create and care for their very own kokedama. Sure, the dirt under their nails may be a pain to clean out, but it’ll be absolutely worth it to make this beautiful, elegant plant sculpture in the end.

Hang it in your living room with plenty of sunlight to display the fruits of your little one’s hard work! Or consider putting it in your child’s bedroom so you can teach them how to care for another living thing – just like some of our Centre’s students learned through our Goldfish Adventure!

Pendulum Pandemonium At Motion Art Space!

The famous artist Jackson Pollock used a kinetic approach to make art. Basically, he would paint using a ‘drip technique’ by splashing liquid household paint over his canvases. Alternatively, he would use marbles or even just flick his paintbrush over his canvases to create truly stunning artworks!

We’re not expecting your little kids to immediately become the next great abstract expressionist artist. But Motion Art Space gives them the opportunity to really just cut loose and have fun.

This art studio is dedicated to such kinesthetic art. They provide the canvases, paint brushes and tools – like marbles and even pendulums – needed to make these gorgeous artworks. The studio is big enough for your little ones to run wild and express their creativity.

They accept kids as young as two years old, so feel free to bring along even your youngest for this artsy adventure. And the entire experience is self-paced, so there’s no need to worry about not being able to keep up.

Do note that Motion Art Space is pretty (understandably) popular, so bookings must be made in advance for their sessions! Rest assured that the trouble is well worth it: This art workshop allows your kids to bring home their amazing artwork after they’re done playing – ahem, painting, their canvas!

Why Should I Send My Kid For An Art Workshop?

We get it, an art workshop can take some commitment both in terms of time and money. And it’s possible that your kids may not find their calling in art after all. But even so, we at ONE Intervention are certain that you should at least give them the chance to try.

Art workshops for kids can be extremely therapeutic. This is known as art therapy, and has been backed by research to show that the act of creating art has tangible mental, emotional and physical benefits for the artist.

For children with special needs, the benefits of sending your kid for an art workshop are even more prominent.

Here are just a few of the reasons:

Art Promotes Communication and Self Expression

Through art workshops, kids with special needs can express themselves nonverbally. Some children with special needs may be uncomfortable with verbal expression, or may require additional support before they are able to communicate their needs and wants with their voice.

Art gives them the space they need to convey thoughts and emotions that may otherwise be difficult for them to articulate. This includes both positive and negative emotions – meaning that children with special needs are able to take advantage of art to express themselves fully.

Art workshops for kids facilitate communication

Hence, art can serve as an important tool through which children with special needs can communicate their desires and needs. This grants them a sense of agency since they are able to speak up for themselves, independent of what others may think they want.

Art Improves Motor Skill

All of the above art workshops for kids require the use of fine motor skills. This includes tasks like gripping the paintbrush for the ink painting in H&C Chinese Art Center’s class, as well as the rolling of marbles and pendulums over the canvas in Motion Art Space’s studio.

Also, art can help children with special needs understand grip strength. This is important because grip strength is a fundamental marker of child development – it’s the key to mastering other physical skills such as hand-eye coordination

In time, the fine motor skills learnt are very important for daily tasks such as getting dressed and writing. Art provides the key to this packaged in a fun and creative manner that children are likely to be more receptive to.

Art Refines Creative Thinking

This point should be pretty obvious, but do we really understand the full benefits of being able to think out of the box?

Being able to think creatively opens up new opportunities for your kids. People who have mastered this skill are able to adapt to changes and be versatile problem solvers. This allows them to overcome unexpected challenges and grow even more as a person.

Art workshops for kids facilitate creative thinking

Art facilitates creative thinking because it encourages people to push themselves to the limits of their imagination in order to come up with something new. This skill is transferable and undoubtedly will serve a person well into their future.

Tell Me More!

Feeling fantastic? Excited to send your kids for these art workshops? Or just a little bit curious about how else art therapy can help? Well, if you want to find out more about art therapy and how it can benefit children with special needs, ONE Intervention Centre has just the thing for you.
