AVBA Approach
What is AVBA?
AVBA (Applied Verbal Behaviour Analysis) approach is a strategy derived from the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). It focuses on teaching communication and language skills by observing how individuals interact with their environment, such as seeing what prompts the individual to communicate.
AVBA emphasises the importance of the environment in shaping communication by focusing on three key elements:
- Identifying motivating reinforcers: Not everyone is motivated by the same things. Therefore, therapists work to identify what truly motivates the individual to communicate. For example, this could be social interaction with a favourite caregiver or access to a preferred activity like playing with a specific toy. As a result, therapists can create a system where communication becomes a desirable behaviour that leads to positive outcomes.
- Understanding antecedents: In AVBA therapy, herapists pay close attention to what prompts the individual to want to communicate. Such as, a basic need like hunger or thirst or a desire for a preferred activity. Additionally, it could be an emotional state like frustration or excitement. Consequently, therapists can teach individuals to communicate their needs and wants before frustration sets in or a situation escalates.
- Teaching functional communication skills: Once the motivating factors and communication triggers are understood, AVBA focuses on equipping the individual with the skills they need to effectively express themselves. Overall, the ultimate goal is to create a functional communication system. It should allow the individual to express their wants and needs in a way that is understood by others.
Benefits and Importance of AVBA Approach
- Increased Communication Skills: AVBA equips individuals with the tools they need to express themselves effectively. Which leads to increased independence and social interaction.
- Reduced Frustration:
Breaking down communication barriers: Frustration stems from the inability to be understood, so providing a bridge is essential. It equips individuals with alternative communication methods. Additionally it reduces the feeling of being unheard and fosters a sense of agency.
Improved self-advocacy: AVBA empowers individuals to advocate for themselves. For example, they can express discomfort, disagreement, or preferences. Simultaneously leading to a greater sense of control and reduced frustration in daily life.
- Improved Social Skills: Effective communication is the foundation for social connection. It allows individuals to engage in reciprocal interactions, share jokes, and build rapport with others. As a result, this fosters a sense of belonging and social inclusion.
- Targeted Approach: AVBA tailors interventions to the specific needs and goals of each individual.
Overall, the AVBA approach is a powerful strategy for promoting communication skills and empowering individuals with communication challenges to express themselves effectively.
